From time to time we find ourselves in need of a gift for our boss or administrative staff. What’s appropriate? What says I value you? What doesn’t cross the line personally, yet recognizes that you understand they are not just a co-worker, but they too are people with an entire life outside of the office?
The easiest way to say I value you as a person, and not just as my work family, is to offer something unrelated to work and personalized. Easier said than done, or maybe not. If you don’t know their personal interests, you can always fall back on the beauty of nature or a simple lined design with classic colors.
If choosing the simplistic design, it’s really as easy as observing the individual’s office space and choice of clothing and accessories to pinpoint colors they appreciate and gravitate towards. Let’s face it, if I despise the color green, I’m certainly not going to surround myself with like-colored trinkets in my office, let alone adorn my body with items featuring said color.
Gift giving at the office can be tricky for sure, but it really takes but a second to observe and appreciate your workmate’s ‘go to’ colors and style without ever having to ask a personal question. Consider it a game, one where you not only win, but you have the pleasure of knowing you put forth the extra effort to let someone know you appreciate them. Enough so, to not give them just a bottle of wine, bouquet of flowers, or gift certificate. You went the extra mile, in a world where people more often choose the easiest route.
It’s a win-win for all.
